Pokémon Gen 10 Release Date Confirmed: Winds and Waves Coming to Switch 2 in 2027

The Pokémon franchise is preparing to enter a new generation as Gen 10 has officially been revealed.

Continuing the series’ tradition, two versions, Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, will launch together in 2027 for the Nintendo Switch 2.

In this new generation, players will explore a large open world made up of many islands. The games will also introduce underwater areas that players can explore for the first time. Along with this, fans will meet a group of Pokémon, including three starter options:

  • Browt, a Grass-type bird
  • Pombon, a Fire-type dog
  • Gecqua, a Water-type gecko

Browt looks like a small bird with a round head and a cute appearance. Gecqua is a calm and confident gecko that walks on four legs. Meanwhile, Pombon is an adorable orange puppy with fluffy hair around its neck, and it is already becoming a favorite among many fans.

Early footage of Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves has already given fans a glimpse of the new region. The world includes thick jungles, a modern beach resort with water slides, swamp areas filled with wide oceans, mangroves, colorful coral reefs underwater and caves filled with lava. The visuals look more detailed and improved than past Pokémon games, especially after some fans were disappointed with how recent titles looked.

The big Gen 10 reveal was made during the Pokémon Presents livestream, which was held to celebrate the franchise’s annual Pokémon Day as well as its 30th anniversary, making the announcement even more special for longtime fans.

Alongside the main Gen 10 reveal, the livestream also included announcements related to other Pokémon titles.

The Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves trailer began by showing artwork of famous locations from past games, giving fans a look back at the series’ history. After that, Pikachu appeared in vacation outfits and welcomed viewers, leading into the first full preview of the franchise’s next generation.

The two Pikachu shown in the trailer are named Mr. Windychu and Mrs. Wavychu. These characters will be part of Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves and are expected to play some role in the game. The Pokémon Company also teased fans online and suggested that these Pikachu could be connected to the player’s adventure in some way, though their exact role has not been revealed yet.

According to the official details, Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are being developed by Game Freak only for the Nintendo Switch 2. The games will let players explore beautiful island locations surrounded by a large ocean. The Pokémon living in this region have adapted to their natural surroundings, creating their own unique habitats. During the journey, players will work together with different Pokémon to move forward, face challenges, and deal with natural obstacles along the way.

Additionally, the trailer ends with a more serious and mysterious moment. The sounds of strong winds and powerful waves can be heard, hinting that storms and other dangers may play an important role in the story.

This announcement comes four years after fans were first introduced to Gen 9 through Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, which came out in 2022. Those games were set in a region inspired by Portugal and Spain and introduced starter Pokémon Sprigatito, Quaxly, and Fuecoco. They also added new features like Terastallization, which allows Pokémon to change their type during battles.

Before the official reveal, some early information about Gen 10 had already appeared online through a leak from Game Freak. The leak suggested the games would include island areas to explore, which has now been confirmed. It also mentioned the names Pokémon Wind and Pokémon Waves, which were early versions of the final titles Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves.

In the meantime, several other Pokémon games are also coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 and other platforms. Pokémon Legends: Z-A has already introduced a new battle system that is different from the classic turn-based style. Another upcoming game, Pokémon Pokopia, will offer a more relaxing experience similar to life-simulation games. Nintendo has also confirmed Pokémon Champions, a battle-focused title launching on Switch and mobile devices.
