HBO’s Harry Potter Series Premieres Dec. 25

Share

HBO’s “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” is set to premiere on Dec. 25, 2026, a date the official Harry Potter YouTube channel posted on Oct. 29. The Harry Potter series premiere is now about seven weeks away, yet the official pages still do not say what time the first episode starts.

That leaves some blanks in the launch plan. To separate the official record from guesswork, we went back through every Harry Potter release on the Warner Bros. Discovery press site, the official harrypotter.com pages and the official YouTube uploads, and logged what each one said and when.

The official record, date by date

The table below lists only milestones that appear on an official Warner Bros. Discovery, HBO or Harry Potter page. Dates are the publication dates shown on those pages.

Read in order, the releases show how the timeline moved. As late as Jan. 15, 2026, the score announcement said the series “will debut in 2027.” Ten weeks later, that window had moved up to Christmas 2026.

How “Christmas 2026” became Dec. 25

The earlier date came with the first teaser. HBO Max released it on March 25 at its UK and Ireland launch event, and the press release said the show “will debut Christmas 2026 on HBO.” We covered that moment in our report on the first teaser and its Christmas 2026 window.

For months after that, official wording stayed at “Christmas 2026.” The press release for the second teaser, dated Sept. 2, still used that phrase rather than a calendar date.

The exact day appeared on Oct. 29. A short video on the official Harry Potter YouTube channel says the series “arrives Dec 25.” The official harrypotter.com explainer now says the show “will debut on 25th December 2026 on HBO and HBO Max.”

Some outlets reported Dec. 25 before Oct. 29. We did not find that date on an official HBO or Warner Bros. Discovery page dated earlier, so the table starts it at Oct. 29.

What is still unannounced

None of the official pages we checked as of Nov. 3 gives a start time for the premiere. They also do not say whether episodes will arrive weekly or how long the run will last, and no finale date has been posted.

What HBO has fixed is the size of the season. Both teaser press releases describe an eight-episode first season. The March 27 release also said the first teaser drew more than 277 million organic views across platforms in 48 hours, which the company called the most-watched trailer in HBO and HBO Max history.

Where to watch

In the United States, the show will air on HBO and stream on HBO Max. Outside the U.S., Warner Bros. Discovery says it will stream exclusively on HBO Max “where it’s available,” and it names Germany, Italy, and the UK and Ireland among the recent launch markets. The official pages do not list regional premiere times.

Cast and creative team

Gardiner writes the series and is its showrunner and an executive producer. Mylod is an executive producer and directs multiple episodes. J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts and David Heyman are also executive producers, according to the press releases.

The adult cast is led by John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Warwick Davis returns to the franchise as Filius Flitwick, a role he first played in the films.

The full picture is larger than most guides show. We counted the official harrypotter.com cast list, dated Sept. 24, one entry per actor and role. It names 71 actors. Seven are marked for season two, including Kit Harington as Gilderoy Lockhart and Rafe Spall as Arthur Weasley.

Season two is already ordered

That season-two casting follows an early renewal. HBO renewed the series on May 6, months before the first season airs, The Hollywood Reporter said. The trade added that HBO did not give the new season a title. Variety reported that it will be based on “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.”

The official harrypotter.com explainer confirms a second season and says Succession writer Jon Brown joins Gardiner as co-showrunner. It also says production on season two is set to begin “sooner than you may think.” No release date for season two appears on the official pages we checked.

Extras before the premiere

Fans who want a look behind the scenes already have one. “Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic,” narrated by Frost, debuted April 5. In the U.S., it streamed on HBO Max at 3 p.m. ET and aired on HBO at 8 p.m. ET/PT, the press release said.

There is also a print tie-in. A new paperback with cover art from the series was scheduled for global English-language release on Nov. 3, according to harrypotter.com. For U.S. readers, Scholastic’s tie-in will carry the title “Philosopher’s Stone” instead of “Sorcerer’s Stone,” to match the show.

That schedule puts the book out weeks before the show. For viewers, the confirmed pieces are the Dec. 25 date, eight episodes, and HBO and HBO Max as the home. As of Nov. 3, the start time and the pace of new episodes were not on the official pages we checked.
